Rahul Dhawan, the lawyer for actor Nayanthara and her husband Vignesh Shivan, has said that no copyright laws were violated by his clients with the footage used in the Netflix documentary Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale.

Recently, actor-filmmaker Dhanush, on behalf of his production house Wunderbar Films Private Limited, filed a civil suit against Nayanthara, Vignesh, and their production house Rowdy Pictures Private Limited, and two others for using behind-the-scenes clips from his film 2015 Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in the docu-series Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale.

Rahul said that the footage used in the documentary was a part of the actor’s “personal library,” and did not belong to Dhanush’s production house.

“Our response is that there is no infringement or violation because what has been utilised by us in the docu series is not part of behind-the-scenes (from the film). The same is part of personal library, Therefore this is not infringement,'' Rahul told Hindustan Times.

Dhawan also said that the next hearing in the Madras High Court is “expected on Monday” i.e. on December 2.

How did the dispute between Nayanthara and Dhanush start?

It all started with an open letter shared by Nayanthara on her Instagram account, where she accused Dhanush of pressuring and blocking her from using behind-the-scenes footage from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in her documentary. She even alleged Dhanush of holding a personal grudge against her and Vignesh. In the letter, Nayanthara even wrote that it was a 'low' move to demand Rs 10 crore from them to use a three-second clip of songs from the film.

Dhanush's lawyer later responded to the open letter with a statement asking them to take down the content. "Advice your client to take down the content infringing my client's copyright over the film NAANUM ROWDY DHAAN by using the same in your client's documentary named NAYANTHARA BEYOND THE FAIRYTALE within 24 hours, failing which my client will be forced to initiate appropriate legal action777 casino free spins, including but not limited to seeking damages to a sum of Rs. 10 crores against your client and Netflix India,'' read the statement.
