As per a report by The Times of India, Rohit Sharma will lead Team India in the ICC Champions Trophy, but Bumrah will be appointed as vice-captain, should he recover from his back injury for the tournament.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) have stated that all the participating teams can submit their provisional squads by January 12, but can change them till February 13.

"That was a difficult match, we got our chances but could not convert them, that's it. Then you can see it in the scoreline. It's a matter of homework," India's long-time goalkeeper Sreejesh said after the close defeat.

India will now play for bronze, the medal they won at Tokyo 2020, against Spain on Thursday while Germany will meet the Netherlands in the gold medal clash later the same day.

This meant that the participating teams will have to finalise their squads by January 12, but will be given a one-month window till February 13 to make any necessary changes.

The tournament, which will be held from February 19 to March 9, marks its return after an eight-year break

The vice-captaincy role, in particular, for the Indian team has been a much-discussed position off late. The Men In Blue played only three ODIs in 2024, and since then, there hasn't been any change on a working formula. Rohit-led Team India reached the final in 2023 ODI World Cup, with the Mumbai-born batter doing exceptionally well.

However, Bumrah's appointment as vice-captain by the selectors comes as a surprise. The role of vice-captain in the Indian team has switched hands considerably.

Earlier, Hardik Pandya was given the mantle during the Rahul Dravid regime, whereas KL Rahul was also at the helm of vice captaincy. Shubman Gill also deputized as vice-captain for Team India following Gautam Gambhir's arrival, but it seems the selectors have no plans for the youngster.

Instead, it seems Bumrah will be named as vice-captain. The pacer led India to their only Test win in the recently-concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and has been exceptional with the ball. The 30-year-old Bumrah bowled more than 150 overs in the series.

However, his injury in the Sydney Test has raised eyebrows as to whether the pacer would be able to participate in the ICC Champions Trophy. Reportedly, he will sit out of the England series that starts from January 22.
